Deciding not to dwell on the fact that he’s probably with Amelia. Or Bailey. Or possibly some other random bird he picked up. I wasn’t sure anymore, I quietly walked to where Charlie was and covered her up with my comforter. She sighed and took the pillow I was laying on and cuddled it close to her chest. Humming low under her breath, she smiled.

Reminding myself to stop being such a toad, I slid into Ham’s bed and attempted sleep.

“So, you didn’t kiss her?”

I groaned and adjusted the kilt around my waist. “Christ, Amelia, I’m don’t want to talk about it.”

“Why?”

We looked at each other in the mirror of the dressing room and I smiled. “Because I’m a fucking gentleman, that’s why.”

She scoffed. “Don’t bullshit me, Windsor.”

I switched gears. “Fine, let’s talk about Ham.”

“Next.”

Turning from the mirror, I leaned against the counter. “Nope. We haven’t had time to talk, what the hell’s going on?”

She flinched – physically recoiled – and for a moment I saw something scared in her eyes. I didn’t like it, I didn’t like that maybe I had put it there, so I pulled her to me, wrapping my arms around her upper body. “Talk to me. What’s going on? Were you with him last night?”

She hugged me back and then pulled away with a sigh, grabbing a tube of lip balm from the pocket of her jacket. “How pissed would you be if I said yes?”

I thought on it and corrected my twisted forehead mic. I didn’t hate the idea of them being together, but I didn’t love it either. I wanted to guard Amelia from the hell Ham usually brought on women. On the other hand, she could be good for him, but I worried he could be toxic for her. “Not incredibly angry,” I exhaled. “Ams, why Ham? How did this even happen? You’ve watched me for two years, you’ve listened to me harp on him.”

“He’s not the worst guy, Reed.”

“Christ, what a horrible way to describe anyone. He’s not the worst? He better be the fucking best for you.”

Amelia’s shoulders fell. “What if we’re making each other better?”

“I call bullshite because you’re already perfect.”

“Says my best friend who thinks I can do no wrong.” She rolled her eyes and pulled on her tweed jacket, buttoning it up to her neck. “I see something in him.”

He has been different the past month. Not nearly as absurd and much more intuitive of other people’s feelings. I thought it was because he was missing that Bailey woman I thought he was seeing.

My shoulders slumped as the lights in the dressing room flickered, letting us know we had ten minutes until show time. “Don’t accept anything less than the best. You’re worth so much more.” Amelia was special. Amelia deserved everything.

She rubbed her lips together and adjusted the hat on her head. “I love you, you know that.”

I nodded. We were family.

“But I’m able to make decisions on my own.”

“I know you can . . .”

She put her hand on my chest.
